I'm going to do something different in this post – talk about sports. I never blog about sports, but I think it's worth it for this one topic: The St. Louis Rams head coaching search. According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Rams are down to 5 finalists, including Jim Haslett – who is still in the mix.
I actually like Jim Haslett and think he could be a good coach, but I don't think he should be the head coach of the Rams in 2009 because it's not the right situation. This team needs a fresh start.
Imagine if you will that the Rams draft well, sign a few FA's and turnover a good chunk of the roster next season…but still start poorly (say 0 -3 or 1 – 4). What will be the collective reaction of St. Louis Rams fans? Likely FIRE HASLETT, 5 games into his first full season on the job. The Rams will be back into the same boat they are this season, but getting worse. Fans will judge Haslett, not on the "new team" and how they are playing, but as a continuation of a 2-10 start. Fan apathy (and / or outrage) will grow. Blackouts will occur.
However, iIf a new head coach comes in under the same circumstances – poor start, 0 – 3 and 1 – 4, fans will still be people looking for hope. The team is just getting started and just coming together. This new coach will get a 2 or 3 year reprieve to turn it around. Haslett won't.
I think for this simple reason the Rams need to go in a different direction. I hope they do.
If you agree with me please join my facebook group – Don't Resign Jim Haslett as Rams Head Coach, if you don't sound off in the comments.
